The Three Levels of EV Charging

Charging speed is measured in miles of range added per hour. The right setup depends on your daily mileage and your home's electrical supply.

3–5 miles per hour

Level 1 Charging

Uses a standard 120-volt household outlet and the cable supplied with most EVs. It adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour — enough for short commutes or plug-in hybrids, but slow for a full-size battery. No installation is required.

25–40 miles per hour

Level 2 Charging

Runs on a 240-volt circuit, like an electric dryer, and adds around 25–40 miles of range per hour. A Level 2 wallbox is the recommended setup for most homeowners: an empty battery typically refills overnight.

DC Fast Charging

Public fast chargers deliver high-voltage DC power directly to the battery, taking most modern EVs from 10% to 80% in 20–45 minutes. Ideal for road trips, but not installed at home — and frequent use costs more than charging overnight.

Choosing and Installing a Home Charger

Three things to get right before you buy: professional installation, smart features and weatherproofing.

Home Installation

A licensed electrician installs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and mounts the charger, typically in a garage or on an exterior wall. Straightforward installations usually cost $500–$1,500, and federal or utility incentives can offset part of the price. Always obtain a quote first.

Smart Chargers

Wi-Fi-connected chargers let you schedule charging for cheaper off-peak electricity, track energy use and costs from an app, and share power between two EVs. If your utility offers time-of-use rates, a smart charger usually pays for itself.

Charging outdoors? Look for a NEMA 4 (or better) enclosure rating, a holster for the connector and a cable rated for low temperatures. Properly rated units charge safely in rain and snow year-round.
